FEATURING: Saxophonist, Ed Dix, has been active in the Southeast Texas since moving here from Kansas City in 1967 to manage the Agency for Mutual of New York (MONY). He has played in many different musical settings, most recently leading his own jazz quartet. He has taught a course in jazz history at Lamar University and was host of "Jazz Matters" on KVLU, 91.3 FM for four years. Having had the good fortune of growing up in Kansas City, one of the world's most important jazz centers, he still maintains musical contacts there and continues to be invited to play there. Ed has played with many bands and groups including the Stan Kenton and Ralph Flanagan Orchestras, Tex Beneke and others. Guitarist Jeff Simon the area’s premier guitar is well known to jazz fans in Southeast Texas. He has been featured with many groups and is currently leader of the popular “The Innovators” He can play in many different styles but jazz is where his greatest interest lies. His early mentor and hero is his father, the noted bassist Lynn Simon. The Southeast Texas Community Development Corp. honored Jeff in 2003 for his outstanding achievements. Bassist David Johnson is the Gold Standard for swinging electric bass players. A graduate of Lamar's music department, he is currently a teacher/band director at Vidor High School. Drummer Jim Ellis has played drums in local bands led by Wayne Dyess, Jimmy Simmons, and Reggie Rogers. He also performs as a substitute percussionist with the Symphony of Southeast Texas. Prior to his arrival in southeast Texas, he performed with the Buckeye Brass and Sonia Modes in Columbus, Ohio. Jim presently serves as Director of the Business Management Program at Lamar State College - Orange. |
